MALIKI ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY - In commemoration of National Waste Awareness Day which is celebrated every 21 February, the Environmental Engineering Study Program of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang held a real action by handing over four jerry cans of ecoenzyme to TPA Tlekung, Batu City on Tuesday, March 3 2026.
This activity was attended by 13 participants consisting of 6 students, 6 lecturers and 1 admin. The presence of the group was warmly welcomed by the landfill management, which was then continued with the agenda of handing over ecoenzymes and spraying directly on organic waste in the landfill area.
The ecoenzyme submitted is a liquid fermented organic waste which has many benefits, one of which is to help reduce unpleasant odors and speed up the process of decomposing organic waste. This action is a symbol of academics' commitment to supporting more environmentally friendly waste management.
Not only making handovers, Environmental Engineering students also had the opportunity to see firsthand the process of processing organic and inorganic waste at TPA Tlekung. They studied the management system implemented, starting from sorting to the final processing stage.
One of the sources from the TPA, Pak Nanang, explained that the Tlekung TPA management concept was designed to be different from the general stigma about landfills.
"We designed this TPA so that it is not synonymous with the impression of being dirty and dirty. Instead, we want to present it as a space that is clean, educational, and provides a new experience for every visitor," said Pak Nanang.
Apart from Mr. Nanang, this activity also involved Mr. Taufan and Mr. Iwan as guest speakers who provided technical explanations regarding the waste management system at TPA Tlekung.
Head of the Environmental Engineering Study Program, Dr. Aulia Fikriarini Muchlis, S.T., M.T., IAI, said that this activity is not only a form of ceremonial commemoration, but also a means of education and strengthening students' awareness of environmental issues.
Through this activity, the Environmental Engineering Study Program hopes that students will not only understand theory in the classroom, but will also be able to implement the knowledge directly in the field. The momentum of National Waste Awareness Day 2026 is a reminder that waste management is a shared responsibility, which requires collaboration between academics, government and society.
With a collaborative spirit and real action, UIN Malang Environmental Engineering has once again demonstrated its commitment to creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment. (aj)
